As the season turns, the light is changing, the leaves are falling, and there are new things to notice along the way. Here is a little something from our forthcoming Poems for Childhood Collection for your family to carry into the days ahead.
I lagged behind a step or two
One chilly autumn day.
I nudged a pebble with my shoe
And watched it skip away.
It bumped against a larger stone
I liked its little sound.
A few more steps along I saw
A feather on the ground.
I lifted it and tipped it up
To see the other side.
A breeze blew lightly off the river
And spread the fine lines wide.
I brushed one edge across my thumb
Then smoothed it back once more.
The tiny pieces all lay close
Just as they had before.
I held it up against the light
And turned it very slow.
Who ever thought to make a thing
With every piece just so?
